Higher Levels Of The Male Sex Hormone Testosterone Plays A Key Role Against Fighting The Infection Of Covid-19

Men with lower levels of testosterone, well known as the male sex hormone, who become infected with coronavirus are more likely to die from it.

Testosterone helps regulate the body’s immune response, but when a man has too low a testosterone level, it can stop working effectively following a coronavirus infection.

This process, known as a cytokine storm, happens when the immune system starts to go out of control as it tries to kill the pathogen.

Professor Gabrield from the Leibniz Institute for Virology said: “The majority of male Covid-19 patients had low testosterone levels. “Of those male Covid-19 patients who died, the majority also had low testosterone levels. “Therefore, low testosterone levels in men are a significant risk factor for severe and even fatal disease outcome in men upon Covid-19 infection with so-called ‘cytokine inducing’ respiratory viruses.”

The new scientific research study shows men with low testosterone have a 3-fold higher risk of death compared to men with normal testosterone levels.

In the male COVID-19 patients in our Hospital Intensive Care Unit, testosterone levels negatively correlate with inflammatory IL-2 and IFN-γ, whereas estradiol levels positively correlate with the inflammatory cytokine IL-6.

Interpretation: We here show that critically ill male COVID-19 patients suffer from severe testosterone and dihydrotestosterone deficiencies. Both androgens are required to mount antiviral immune responses to combat Covid-19 infection in males.

Devastating lung inflammation triggered by the so-called 'cytokine storm' is thought to be what ultimately kills the sickest coronavirus patients.

Cytokines are a group of cells involved in the immune system's response to injury or infection.

They race to the site of a problem and signal to the body to send more immune cells to mount a defense against a foreign invader.

It's a crucial part of how the body heals itself - but when it goes haywire it can lead to devastating damage.

The influx of immune cells causes inflammation which, when persistent, can go awry and start killing cells in the very tissues the immune system is trying to protect.

When overabundant signalling cytokine cells stay switched 'on' for too long inflammation can continue out of control.

This inflammation overwhelms the lungs of coronavirus patients, sending them into respiratory failure and ultimately killing many of them if this inflammation can't be stemmed.

A New York City scientific research study on hospitalized Covid-19 patients also revealed the most common comorbidity is obesity and hypertension.

The male sex hormone testosterone is key in how the body initiates and regulates various immune responses, including fighting viral infections.

Testosterone plays a particular important role in men's immunity as it is the main male sex hormone.

Conclusion: The new scientific research study reports that men with low testosterone levels have a 3-fold higher risk of death compared to men with normal testosterone levels.
